Why unit price thinking is so sticky
Unit price is easy. It's the number you put in a spreadsheet and compare across quotes. It feels objective. It feels actionable. It also completely ignores everything that happens after the fabric hits your factory floor.
Let's look at what actually happens with different fibers.
Viscose (rayon) is the classic bait. From the outside, it looks like a smart budget choice: soft drape, lower cost per yard, easy to print on. The reality? Viscose loses strength when wet, wrinkles easily, and — as those Google searches show — often feels less comfortable than shoppers expected. When comfort drives returns, the 'cheap' fabric starts costing you in reverse logistics, restocking, and lost repeat purchases.
The elastane hoodie is the flip side. Elastane gives stretch and recovery, which is great. But if the base cotton is weak, the fabric pills after a few washes and the shape distorts. The elastane can't fix a mediocre yarn.
People assume expensive fiber causes expensive products. I'd argue the causation runs the other way: fiber that lasts longer and feels better reduces returns and drives repeat purchases, which lowers cost per unit sold. The premium price is a signal of quality, not the reason for it.
What the price tag isn't telling you
When I'm triaging a bad fabric decision, here's what I include in the real cost:

- Inspection and restocking: another $3–$8 per unit.
- Markdowns on damaged or off-spec goods: can hit 50–80% of wholesale.

The expensive mistake I made in my first year
